ASSIGNMENT 6: RESEARCHING YOUR CITY ABROAD
Brainstorming a Search List
In order to build a research plan for your Study Abroad city, you’ll want to do some brainstorming.
- First, go back to your “topics” list and “questions” assignments you did earlier this semester.
- Open up a new doc in Word, and write out the name of each the topics that interests you (e.g. architecture, social justice, etc.) in English, and in the language of the city you are heading to, if English isn’t their native language.
- Next, list every industry that might be associated with your interests (e.g. journalism, fashion, etc.) Do this in English, and then in the language of the city you are heading to, if English isn’t their native language.
- List every cultural institution that might be associated with your interests (e.g. library, museum, police station, etc.) Do this in English, and then in the language of the city you are heading to, if English isn’t their native language.
- List every individual that might be associated with your interests (e.g. artist, author, architect, choreographer, etc.) Do this in English, and then in the language of the city you are heading to, if English isn’t their native language.
- List every community that might be associated with your (e.g. cultures, subcultures, etc.) Do this in English, and then in the language of the city you are heading to, if English isn’t their native language.
- Post all your notes on Slack in your Assignments section. You can label these notes YOURNAME_BRAINSTORMING
- After your brainstorming, you will be ready to move to doing some Google searches on your interests noted above.
- Any time you see an article or web site of interest, remember to use your Evernote Web clipper to save it to the shared City Abroad file.
- Google search your topics + your city name (e.g. markets and Paris.) Be sure to search both in English and in the language of the city you are heading to. Visit pages of hits that seem interesting and save to your shared Evernote Abroad City file.
- Google search your industries+ your city name (e.g. fashion and Shanghai.) Be sure to search both in English and in the language of the city you are heading to. Visit pages of hits that seem interesting and save to your shared Evernote Abroad City file.
- Google search your institutions+ your city name (e.g. library and Berlin.) Be sure to search both in English and in the language of the city you are heading to. Visit pages of hits that seem interesting and save to your shared Evernote Abroad City file.
- Google search your individuals+ your city name (e.g. photographer and Buenos Aires.) Be sure to search both in English and in the language of the city you are heading to. Visit pages of hits that seem interesting and save to your shared Evernote Abroad City file.
- Google search communities+ your city name (e.g. video gamers and London.) Be sure to search both in English and in the language of the city you are heading to. Visit pages of hits that seem interesting and save to your shared Evernote Abroad City file.
